Texas auto insurance is a must-have for anyone who wants to drive in this great state.  The law requires it!  However, there are many providers of Texas auto insurance, each one claiming to have the lowest rate.  Clearly they cannot all be true.  So what can a Texas driver do to make sure he/she is getting the best rate for ample coverage?

Shoppers for Texas auto insurance can best prepare themselves by understanding the different types of policies available, including what types of coverage are mandatory, which ones are recommended and others that may be entirely optional.

Texas Auto Insurance: What is required.

Texas law provides a clear definition of the minimum insurance you must carry if you want to drive in this state.  You must have at least an auto liability insurance policy, which means you have the means to pay for damages resulting from accidents you may cause.

The minimum liability coverage is often called 20/40/15 coverage, which means a coverage of $20,000 per person injured in an accident, up to $40,000 for everyone hurt in an accident, and $15,000 for property damage, such as damage to the victims vehicle.  Liability insurance does not cover you or your vehicle should you get into an accident.

Texas Auto Insurance: What is recommended.

It is important to realize that if you get into an accident and cause damages in excess of the limits described in your auto insurance policy, you may be sued to cover the overage.

Consider this scenario: if you have purchased only the minimum coverage required by law, and you get into an accident with another person who is driving a new car valued at $25,000, you could be held responsible for an additional $10,000 beyond what your policy provides.  Sure you may have saved twenty bucks per month throughout the term of your policy up to that point, but is it really worth the financial consequences you would then be facing?  Clearly not.

Another scenario to consider is the one in which the fault is shown to be with the other driver.  If you have not purchased Texas auto insurance that covers your personal property, you will be left with all personal property (and perhaps even medical) expenses associated with the accident.

Sure you may have even saved fifty dollars by foregoing personal property insurance, but again, is it worth the risk?  Ultimately these are questions that must be answered by the purchaser of the Texas auto insurance policy, but it is definitely important that they be asked.
